  • 04/05 - We have just added a brand new dictionary to our collection, a LAO dictionary with more than 50,000 entries and available in two versions: Lao script or romanized transcription.
  • 03/05 - Thanks to Ken Chase we have added a new ARABIC dictionary using the Arabic alphabet, and we also updated the romanized version.

  • 4/04 - Release of version 4.1.0.1 (improved wild card search function and updated Italian translation of the interface).
  • 3/04 - Release of version 4.1 of the program, which fixes a few bugs and reduces the delay when opening the program. We also added a basic wild card search, Italian interface language (many thanks to Arturo for the translation), and a Turkish virtual keyboard.

    March 2014

  • 21/03 - Big day in the history of Freelang, as we release version 4.0 of the dictionary. The program was rewritten from scratch, introducing new features such as full Unicode support, no size limit for the entry fields (the old program had a 30/50 character limit), choice of the interface language (and possibility to add new languages) and more flexible customization (choice of various themes, fonts settings are remembered). Besides, you can now use only one program for all our wordlists (which means you can browse Spanish-English and French-Russian wordlists with only one installation of the program). For more information about the features please see the help file. We hope you will like this new version and we are looking forward to your comments and suggestions.

    February 2014

  • 12/02 - We have added a new parsing script on the site (so you can see extracts from the blog on the dictionary pages), as well as a new script for our newsletter (you may receive an email asking you to confirm your subscription again). Thanks to Milan for the great work. Besides, all dictionary pages are now in Unicode, and a bug impacting the display of some online (html) dictionaries has been fixed.

  • 19/06 - It's always sad to think of a language dying, as it is a part of our common memory that dies with it. Most Yeniseian languages became extinct a long time ago, for instance ARIN and PUMPOKOL, but YUGH has become extinct only recently. These three languages are this week's new dictionaries, by our friend Renato. MINGRELIAN and SESOTHO have also been updated.
  • 11/06 - Update of the OJIBWE dictionary (by Charles Lippert).
  • 9/06 - We added a new page to the site: Language Maps. The maps show the geographical distribution of the languages, language families and ethnic groups in various regions of the world.
  • 8/06 - This is another batch of brand new dictionaries by Renato Figueiredo! There is a KHMER dictionary, a TELUGU dictionary and a TAGISH dictionary. Tagish is a nearly extinct language which was spoken in Canada. Then we have more Lezgic languages (spoken in south Dagestan and Azerbaijan), like AGHUL, ARCHI, KRYTS and UDI.
  • Several other dictionaries have been updated: BURMESE, JINGPHO, KIRATI, BUDUKH, RUTUL, MINGRELIAN, KABYLE and SESOTHO.

  • 28/05 - Truly unbelievable, Renato Figueiredo sent us 12 new dictionaries! We are very happy to welcome a BURMESE dictionary, and three other Tibeto-Burman languages: JINGPHO, KIRATI and LEPCHA. We also have Caucasian languages: BUDUKH and RUTUL (both Lezgic languages spoken in Azerbaijan and Dagestan), LAZ (spoken in Turkey), MINGRELIAN and SVAN (both spoken in Georgia). There is also a west Slavic language spoken in Poland, KASHUBIAN, and finally two languages spoken in Africa: KABYLE (in Algeria) and IGBO (in Nigeria). Let's also mention the update of two other dictionaries, BALOCHI and SESOTHO. Thank you very much, Renato!

All these new dictionaries have been given pages with the new design of Freelang, which will be applied gradually to all the other pages. We hope you like it!

Old Frisian was the West Germanic language spoken between the 8th and 16th centuries by the people who had settled in the area between the Rhine and Elbe on the European North Sea. Old Frisian evolved into Middle Frisian spoken from the 16th to the 19th century.

The bug preventing the correct displaying of non Latin characters in the "Characters set" toolbar has been fixed, and the program now supports Unicode, which means the possibility of creating wordlists with true original characters in Thai, Hindi, Japanese etc. The program will now be updated on a regular basis (thank you Sabal!). To update your version, just run "dictionary_setup.exe" (available on any page dedicated to a language) and choose the same folder as the previous version (you don't need to uninstall the previous version).
