Lao is the official language of Laos, and it is also spoken in northeast Thailand (Isan dialect). Lao is very close to Thai but uses a slightly different writing system. The Lao script contains fewer letters than Thai, following a simplification in the 1960's. Like Thai, vowels can be placed above, below, in front of or behind consonants. Lao belongs to the Tai Kadai group inside the Sino-Tibetan language family.
