Yiddish is a non-territorial High German language of Jewish (Ashkenazi) origin, spoken throughout the world by about three million speakers. It emerged as the national language of a large Jewish community in Eastern Europe that rejected Zionism and sought Jewish cultural autonomy in Europe. Yiddish is written with the Hebrew alphabet.
