Freelang Lakota-English dictionary

Lakota is a Siouan language spoken by the Lakota people, a Sioux tribe who lives mostly west of the Missouri River in North and South Dakota. Lakota is mutually intelligible with Dakota. There are about 2,000 Lakota speakers, which makes it one of the largest Native American speech communities, but fluent speakers are aging and many schools and organizations are working to help revitalize and save the Lakota language. Different writing systems have been used since the nineteenth century, and today efforts are being made to adopt the "Standard Lakota Orthography", which is already used by the majority of schools. Did you know? Lakota was the language used in the 1990 movie "Dances with Wolves".
