Maldivian, or Dhivehi (meaning 'islanders' in Sanskrit) is the official language of the Republic of Maldives, an independent island country located south-west of Sri-Lanka and India in the Indian Ocean. Maldivian language has about 300,000 speakers. It is an Indo-Aryan language, closely related to Sinhalese language spoken in Sri Lanka, though the two languages are not mutually intelligible. Maldivian has been influenced by Arabic, French, Persian, Portuguese, Hindustani, and English. Due to the wide distribution of the islands, there are different dialects of Maldivian. The one spoken in Malé, the capital city, is the standard dialect, while northern atolls dialects and southern dialects are very different. Maldivian is written in Thaana script (written from right to left like Arabic, with which it shares several common diacritics for vowel sounds), but can also be written in Devanagari script and can be transliterated in Latin alphabet. Since the sixties English has become the language of education in most schools, and English is widely used in the administration.
