We were then encouraged (and later forced) by all around us to speak in English and English only. Given where we lived, this was, of course, necessary. But we still hated it.
I still am able to speak, read, and write in Low Prussian German-- but by age 25 ad learned American English, Standard High German (Hochdeutsch), Russian; around 30 I had learned to be nominally conversational in Nederlands (Dutch).
This Website is Öösgezeijknet-- Outstanding! I came across it when it was cited as a reference used for a post on a European Heritage site I am a member of. I rolled up on it about 6 hours ago and am just now pulling myself awy. Keep it up!

For instance, I've used it on the job when I was a cataloger at a library to help with books in other languages; in my area of the United States we have a number of Hispanic and Russian immigrants, and while Spanish I know enough of to get by, Russian and Cyrillic I know nothing of. Again while seeing finnish english dictionaries I was disappointed that almost all the dics were online. Free lang was the site which gave me a free dic for offline browsing in windows. Well, I saw the equivalent of language as Kiel in the dic and then it was easy getting my mobile baCK TO CIVILIZATION I.E., ENGLISH LANGUAGE. Now I have downloaded other languages dics to learn French, German, American, Old English, Esparanto etc just for pure fun of learning a new Lnaguage. Thank You FREELANG.net

Perhaps the pages should be re-written to unicode, they would not have to open new window for all non-latin-1 phrases. I have only read the "I love you" phrases list, and both Czech and Slovak translations are wrong (because they should contain non-latin-1 characters) - they should be "miluji tě" and "ľúbim ťa".

Being so accustomed to the Internet run-around I was surprised by this site. It's all it purports to be - you can download free easy-to-use dictionaries (from and to English) in 39 (as per now) languages, including Welsh and Esperanto, even Old English. This is in keeping with the philosophy of free knowledge for all. It's what the fathers (and mothers?) of the Internet envisioned. I thank you and salute you. May you grow and grow.
And about growing - I'm a little jealous of the size of some of the dictionaries. French, German and Dutch are very comprehensive. I'd like to see some of the lesser known languages become larger. Afrikaans for example, should have about as many words as Dutch, plus all the African, Malaysian, Portuguese and English that crept into the language over the centuries. Let's see people make more of a contribution to the site. Let's see an Afrikaner donate a fuller dictionary. The same goes for everyone else. I've heard it said that the Inuit have fifty words for 'snow'. Let's get them all. Let's also hope for more and more dictionaries, from Arabic to Khoi, from Hebrew to Zulu.
To the founders of the site, and to those who keep it running, yours is an exalted mission, yours is a holy calling - full strength to you. And thank you.

When I first came across your website some four years ago, I knew that I had hit upon something fantastic. I used your dictionaries to study similarities in the vocabularies of the Germanic languages and to aid in planning artificial ones. Such services as offered by your website are a rare find on the Internet, and I am always impressed by how you continue to improve them.
Now, however, I find myself unable to enjoy your once eminently useful resources. For about the last eight months, I have had a problem such that when I download and install the language program and a wordlist and try to use them, the program's window opens somewhere far above the upper border of the screen. I can tell by the bar at the bottom of the screen that the program is open, but it cannot be seen on the screen. And then, when I close the program, I can see the window collapsing in from somewhere above the screen.
I hope you can help me with this problem so that I might once again make use of your generously offered information.

Thanks SO MUCH for such a great appl / tool! Corresponding with persons from a variety of countries, I am finding it SO useful (also just for impressing friends! - as a Canadian, I'm fortunate to have persons from many countries around me everyday.
F_at_ceman and Kitty - don't be ashamed of windmills - we have increasing numbers here in Canada & North America, generating electricity (and helping to save the planet). We also have a lot of people putting fingers in dykes (but I think these kind of dykes are different than the ones of which you speak ;-)

These dictionairies are so freaking handy! The invention of the century! You people must be really up to date and smart... oh wait... Netherlands and Windmills? Netherlands and Canals?? Stuck in the past? The Netherlands are so much more than a simple windmill or canal. Just like that America is more than 'the land of opertunities where everyone is rich'; just like France being more than cheese and wine.
Sorry, but I just had to post this. It really bugs me. Some people actually think we all wear wooden shoes and eat cheese! I hate cheese; and I don't have one pair of wooden shoes in my whole street!
