Bashkir: the third largest nationality in Russia The Russian government put in place measures to help in the social development of the Bakshir language. Being the third largest nationality in Russia, behind Russian and Tartar, it was imperative that the needs of its population be taken into consideration. This led to the establishment of the Modern Bashkir Linguistics Association. Bashkir or Bashkort language is a Turkic language belonging to the Altaic family. It is the national language of Bashkort people and the official language of the Bashkortostan Republic. The language is spoken by about 1.4 million people, mainly in the Bashkortostan Republic, but also by Bashkir minority groups in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
