Turkmen is the national language of Turkmenistan. It is spoken by approximately 3.5 million people in Turkmenistan, and by an additional approximately 5.5 million in other countries, including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Turkey. It is an Altaic language, like Turkish.
