I saw your blog - and here is another dictionary: The American Heritage Dictionary from 1992, which Microsoft delivered with Office 1997 (En) as an add-in under the name “Microsoft Bookshelf Basics”

give in

1. To hand in; submit: She gave in her report.

2. To cease opposition; yield.

So there is no doubt – you are right!
If an American Dictionary lists it as the first choice for explaining the sentence it must be because of unfamiliarity with the expression, that some say that it is wrong English.

Perhaps the unfamiliarity with "give in" is due to the fact that it mostly is used in the past tense - I "gave in" my paper - ?
